Two becomes one on site

Bradgate supplied this huge substation in two sections of some 26m x 4m x 4m, and integrated them at the track-side location. The module is central to the power upgrade of the UK’s West Coast main rail line, and contains HV gas insulated switchgear and a full complement of control systems located at one end. Because of this, the module incorporates an insulated floor, forming a very rigid base to avoid the risk of gas escaping. When the module is lifted, deflection is limited to 2mm over the whole floor. It is fully welded and finish-painted to provide a 30 to 40-year life, with all mechanical and electrical installation carried out by Bradgate’s own installation team.
